STI Ct/NG

Description

STI Ct/NG refers to a specific combination test used to detect Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), two of the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs).  This test is often used because both Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea can cause similar symptoms and can sometimes co-occur.

Here's a breakdown of the Ct/NG test:

  • Type of Test: This is a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), most commonly performed using a technique called polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

  • Sample Collection:  A urine sample or swabs from the cervix, vagina, or urethra are collected depending on your anatomy and sexual practices.

  • What it Detects: The test detects the genetic material (DNA) of Chlamydia and Gonorrhea bacteria in the sample.

  • Benefits:

    • Accurate: NAATs are highly accurate for detecting Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea.

    • Fast: Results are typically available within 1-2 days.

    • Non-invasive: Urine sample or swabs are less invasive than some other STI tests.

Who Should Get Tested?

Anyone who is sexually active should consider getting tested for STIs, especially if they have new sexual partners or experience symptoms. Symptoms of Chlamydia and Gonorrhea can include:

  • Burning sensation during urination

  • Unusual vaginal discharge for people with vulvas

  • Unusual discharge from the penis

  • Pelvic pain (lower abdominal pain)

  • Testicular pain

Treatment:

If you test positive for Chlamydia or Gonorrhea, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection. It's important to complete the entire course of antibiotics, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is cleared.

Limitations of Ct/NG Test:

  • Doesn't detect all STIs: This test only detects Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea.  A comprehensive STI screening may include additional tests for other STIs.

  • Recent infection: The test may not detect very recent infections.

If you have any concerns about STIs, Ct/NG testing, or need to schedule a screening, talk to your doctor or visit a sexual health clinic.

Turnaround times:

Standard CT/NG: 2-5 working days
