Description
A comprehensive STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) screen is the most thorough option for detecting a wide range of these infections. It typically involves a combination of blood tests, urine tests, and swabs depending on the specific tests your doctor recommends based on your risk factors and sexual practices.
Here's a breakdown of what you might expect in a comprehensive STI screen:
Tests Included (May Vary):
Bacterial STIs:
Chlamydia trachomatis: Usually tested with a urine sample or swabs from the cervix, vagina, or urethra.
Neisseria gonorrhoeae: Usually tested with a urine sample or swabs from the cervix, vagina, or urethra.
Viral STIs:
HIV 1&2: A separate blood test specifically detects HIV.
Hepatitis B and C: Blood tests are used to detect these viruses.
Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) 1 & 2: These can be detected through blood tests or a swab from a visible sore (if present). However, blood tests may not always detect recent infections.
Syphilis Blood Test: This is usually included in a comprehensive screen. It's a two-step process:
Non-treponemal test (e.g., RPR or VDRL)
Treponemal test (e.g., FTA-ABS) if the non-treponemal test is positive.
